Chris' take on planing and using tools

In the book, Chris doesn't take a map with him, if he had he would've been able to cross the Teklanika river easily but he didn't, almost like he considered it like cheating, why?

Chris wanted to live life in the moment rather than planning things out. Chris romanticized the outdoors and wanted to experience things as he encountered them. Chris could not survive in the harsh Alaskan wilderness this way.
