Chapter 17

In chapter 17, Krauker does not arrive at the bus until after about four pages. In those first pages, he gives us the detail of the equipment he carries, the flow of the river, and the others with him. Is this necessary? What does it add? What does it detract?

In the opening of Chapter 17, Karakauer illuminates the reader as to the reality of what could have been. Unlike Chris, he arrives there prepared, and through those preparations which include a map and neccesary supplies the reader is quickly apprised of the fact that something as simple as the map he carried could have saved Chris' life.
