Linda makes the decision to escape the plantation and hide in her grandmother's shed. This places her grandmother in danger because she's hiding an escaped slave, but it also saved her children from being sent to her at the plantation and forced to work or suffer other abuses. She spends years in another type of confinement in order to assure the safety and well being of the children.
