Quite often, slaves were separated from their families. Harriet received strength from her grandmother. After her mother died, her grandmother stepped in and was the one person in whom she could find comfort. Relationships between white women and their slaves was often tense. Whether their reactions were induced by cruel husbands, jealousy, or racism, some relished the horrors inflicted upon slaves. We also see kindness in this chapter...... the kindness of an old woman to a slave nobody wanted, and the freedom that woman bestowed upon her as a result.
