One of the biggest contributors to the breakdown of society was and is alcoholism. Charles Sheldon, the author, was a social reformer. In 1896, he wrote this book with the idea that both church and state together could play a role in social reform, specifically the abolition of alcohol. State sanctioned prohibition only made the alcohol flow even more making bootleggers and organised crime incredible amounts of money.
