The author chooses to have the film break such that the reader sees the grandfather looking critically at the father and rubbing his cheek twice. Why does the author choose this particular image to emphasize by showing it twice?

 I think this makes the scene more compelling. There is a disconnect between the mother and father that grandfather picks up on. The breaking of the film reflects the break in their relationship.
