Initially the community is in shock. They cannot process this happening in their small community. The residents of Holcomb receive the news of the arrest with ambivalence. Feelings of relief are mitigated by doubts as to whether Dick and Perry are solely to blame for the murders: “Some day they’ll get to the bottom, and when they do they’ll find the one behind it. The one wanted Clutter out of the way. The brains”
