In Cold Blood

In cold blood by Truman Capote, what is the purpose of detailed descriptions of family members?

I think I have the answer figured out but I would like a response to see if I'm correct.

We really get a sense of the people that Dick and Perry kill. This brings greater perspective of the crimes to the reader. The reader is emotionally invested in this family, which makes the murder and the murderers both tragic and compelling.
