Capote uses timeline and setting to both give context and a documentary-like sense of realism to his book. At first the reader is introduced to the village of Holcomb, a small yet prosperous farming settlement in western Kansas. He juxtaposes this very organized and disciplined community with the chaos and visceral lives of Dick and Perry. Then the timeline of the story have the placid country setting meet with the very violent and chaotic crimes of Dick and Perry.
