Herb Clutter was a very successful farmer. He worked hard to attain what he had rather than being born into it. The Clutter family lived on beautiful land and, aside from Mr. Clutter's depression, they lived the American dream. They were respected by friends and neighbors and personified the ethos of the American spirit. Dick and Perry envied everything about the Clutters. The chronic failures of these two highlighted everything they weren't compared with the Clutters. They were the antithesis of the American Dream. Mr. Clutter became a muse for both Dick and Perry for different reasons.
