Failure of the American dream?

I need some passages that explain the failure of the American dream (can pertain to the Clutters or to Dick and Perry)

The Clutter family embodies the American Dream. Herb, born into a humble home, becomes a ranch owner because of his tenacity and hard work. He is a self-made man, who lives modestly and provides for his family's every need. Unfortunately, the Clutter's dream is shattered when Dick and Perry arrive with their desire to attain riches without having to work for them.
