What point/argument does the author make about the Vietnam war and how does he do so?

I think one of the themes is the uselessness and waste of war, particularly the Vietnam war. He brings the personalities of various people into the narrative and we see the unnatural effects, both physically and emotionally, on these men and the loved ones that they leave behind.
