why was maya not speaking anymore

Maya's father unexpectedly shows up and takes her away from her grandmother to live with her mother Vivian in St. Louis, Missouri. There Maya is sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. After the court case Mr. Freeman is murdered. Maya lives with the guilt of her assault and that she somehow was responsible for Mr. Freeman's death (for her testimony in court) Maya thinks that she has become the mouthpiece for the devil. She stops speaking to everyone except Bailey.
