I think that you should consider the title of the book here. The title comes from a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar called"Sympathy."In this poem, the bird in the cage throws itself against the bars in an attempt to be free. The bird gets and heals: then it tries again. The bird finally says a prayer wanting to be free. The bird is a metaphor for Angelou. Angelou tries to escape her painful reality: she is in an emotional prison. She gets bloodied and keeps trying again to be free. Her only hope is that, like the bird’s prayer, God will set her free one day.
