The effect of Mrs. Jones' action might be that Roger will think twice before stealing from someone. Mrs. Jones showed him kindness and fogiveness; she even showed him trust when she left her pocketbook out. In the end, she gives Roger ten dollars to get the shoes he was willing to steal for. She warns him that "....shoes come by devilish like that will burn your feet," meaning that they'd come back to haunt him, possibly land him in jail. Her actions may just have given him both a new way of lokking at life and a new way of living it.
