I believe that by the time we reach the end of the novel, Maya is a far different person from the little girl who viewed herself as ugly, desired love and acceptance, and experienced abuses no little girl should be subjected to. In the novel's conclusion we see her emerge as a young woman who has not only made peace with her own mother but become a mother as well. She also learns to embrace her race and her womanhood. I don't know if she's completely happy, but she has begun the journey down the path that will bring her happiness.
