Why is graduation so important in Stamps?
Graduation is a magical and anticipation-filled time in Stamps. Parents are proud of their children, the graduates are eager to be released from the schoolroom, and the younger grades are excited to help with preparations. Graduation is such an important event for all cross-sections of Black Stamps because it is the time the entire community recognizes the achievements of their children. It is the one guaranteed time of the year where students receive new clothes and have the opportunity to dress up and look their best. Finally, it represents the transition from a child to a proud member of the “Negro race” (307).
