This is known as a frame story. The ending takes us back to the beginning. The reader, however, has experienced the story so has greater context into what the beginning lines mean. In both beginning and our narrator is traveling from Monument, Massachusetts, to Rutterburg, Vermont on a on an old worn out bicycle on a cold October day.
