When Mala was younger, she had stolen from her friends, plastic jewelry, and brought shame upon her family. She felt so guilty that she decided that she did not need materialistic validation that comes from things like earrings,

What are these baubles which tempt me? Why should I lose my character for a few metal trinkets?

They don't say thank you because Pashtuns never forget a good deed and will always reciprocate.
