Malala states that Zia made "Afghanistan a rallying point nor only for the West,....but also Muslims". This invasion created an unlikely alliance. Explain why th West was so interested in stopping the Russian invasion and then explain why many Muslim countries were also intent on halting the invasion.

The West did not want Russians annexing land in the Middle East. There were of course vast oil resources Russia wanted. The Russians also wanted a foothold into the region for military advantage. Muslim countries wanted control of their own resources and destiny. Few countries ever welcome an occupying force.
