AS far as I recall Harry Potter's lightning shaped scar was the symbol of what separates Harry from the other magicians. It symbolized a sort of supremacy or chosen one amongst the other wizards. This scar certainly made Harry a target for other dubious characters. It also meant Harry had to understand his importance in the narrative to become what he is supposed to. Physical deformities, like the scar, creates a sense of otherness that a character must come to terms with.
