Papi or Carlos, had to flee to the United Sates before Trajillo got to him or his family. A physician, Papi had to re-establish his professional reputation and credentials. This was tough on him. In America the family no longer enjoyed the lifestyle they had at home. Papi was the unquestioned authority of the family in the old days but finds himself emasculated in America. His girls rebel against his strict rules. An American sense of sexuality, independence , and moral freedom wears on Papi. He has trouble reconciling himself to this new world.
