I can speak to the book and Esperanza in particular. Esperanza feels trapped by her family and economic circumstances. She feels that her destiny lies with the experience shared by most girls in her community. She tries to avoid getting pregnant and living a life of poverty. Esperanza does change in the end. She develops her own identity. She gets an education, becomes a writer, and finally has a house of her own.
