In the chapter entitled Marin, we get the sense she isn't in control of her life when we learn that "Louise's parents are going to send her back to her mother", and "shes too much trouble". We also see how Marin is limited when we learn that no one ever sees her until her aunt comes home, that "she can only stay out in front".
