Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet

What does the last sentence imply about the way Henry treated Ethel throughout their marriage? Why do you think he married Ethel?

Clearly, Henry ultimately chose to marry Ethel, not Keiko, though at one point in his life he obviously had strong feelings for Keiko. Considering this, explain Bud’s comment to Henry when he tells Henry, “I’m sorry about your wife… Ethel was a fine woman. I know you did right by her” (53).

The last sentence implies that Henry treated Ethel well, that their was a happy marriage. Bud's comment is almoast a compliment.... he was aware of Henry's feeling for Keiko, and yet, he knows that Henry treated his wife, as a wife should be treated.... with honor and respect.
