Why do you believe Baaba was so against Effia, her own daughter?

Baaba is not the girl's birth mother. This may be a contributing factor to her being downright cruel. Baaba beats Effia throughout her childhood and makes Effia conceal her menstruation so that she can marry her to a white man and get a large bride price.
