What did Louis Sachar include in the book that was not needed??

Can be any figurative language or plot events. Although it is interesting, I think that the part about Kate Barlow is unnecessary.

Kate Barlow is the historical myth that links the present to the past. I suppose it is not vital but it does give the narrative a greater sense of purpose.
