It is not exactly a newsflash to know that government does not always tell the people the whole truth about anything; one of the themes of the play is the way in which public health policy turns a blind eye to environmental factors, which is actually incredibly ironic since it also shows that environmental factors hugely affect public health. Agricultural policies also affect this; many of the immigrants work in the agriculture industry and are therefore clustered together in one area. Their need to be in close proximity to their jobs means that they are forced to live in an area that is not environmentally safe. There is also a question about the chemicals used in the agriculture industry, and their disposal; they appear to be affecting the environment around them which is in turn making the people of McFarland sick.
