This is only a short answer question space so I can only make a general comment. Spike Jonze is very specific in how he shoots Theodore in the presence of couples. For example, when Theodore is on the elevator with Amy and Charles, Jonze shoots the couple in a two-shot while filming Theodore in a single. The imagery shows us the isolation that he feels in being single. The composition of the image highlights Theodore's solitude in contrast to their togetherness. Then, at the end, when it seems that Theodore has been abandoned by the only companion he has, we see Theodore and Amy on the roof of their apartment building, and Amy rests her head on his shoulder, an image of embodied human connection. Everything about Samantha is imbedded in her voice. Samantha is an OS that Theodore initially purchases to help organize his life. As she learns more about how to be an intuitive system, mirroring the qualities of a human being, Samantha becomes a close confidant and lover to Theodore. She is pure and rational, in contrast to the messy human relationships that Theodore has previously been involved in, and this is why Theodore loves her so much. Unfortunately, she is an extension of Theo's fantasy girl; he projects all of his fantasies onto this girl who is rapidly evolving far past his own stagnated evolution.
