For most of the play, this seems to be the case. Through both force of personality and trickery, Hedda seems to get whatever she wants. She is able to reconnect with Lovborg and help him as she sees fit. However, the last scene of the play exposes the limitations that a woman will always have in that society, when Judge Brack blackmails her into being subservient to him. Despite her force of will, she is again under the control of a man. Hence, she ends it all.
