Why was bumping the bottom of the boat on the river such a bad thing in Part 2?

The bumping of the boat on the bottom of the river, the unseen stones, and hidden banks were all a danger to the boat itself.... they threatened to "rip the life out of the tin-pot steamboat and drowned all the pilgrims".
