Why does the Russians seem out of place in this environment?

The Russian is so young that it is uncertain whether or not he fully understands what he is doing in Africa. He attracted to adventure but seems oblivious to his own motivations for being there and why he is so enamored by Kurtz, a virtual crazy man.
