Marlow visits the woman in the picture he brought home from Kurtz. THe woman thinks that Kurtz inspired the best in the men that met him and followed him. This is true to a point. Kurtz was charismatic and the natives certainly seemed loyal to him. Even Marlow could not resist his effect. Kurtz had his flaws, he was not as altruistic I think as the reader might have him be. His insatiable hunger for ivory, for example, casts a shadow over the woman's statement.
