Heart of Darkness

Literally, how does Kurtz, in that instance, turn his back on the station?

***PART TWO***

Earlier, the phrase "turning his back suddenly on the headquarters, on relief" is used to describe Kurtz. Literally, how does Kurtz, in that instance, turn his back on the station?

The image of Kurtz is ambiguous. On one hand Kurtz could be interpreted as turning his back on white civilization for the darkness of the forest. This can be seen as counter-cultural and courageous. We could however be more pessimistic and see this as Kurtz returning for more ivory.
