In what ways do the helmsman and whites aboard jeopardize the steamer when it comes under attack from the shore?

The pilgrims open fire with rifles creating a cloud of smoke. The smoke makes it difficult to steer the boat through the narrow channel. Even the helmsman leaves the steering to try and find a gun.
