Kurtz, we are told, would have killed the Russian for his ivory, but the Russian excuses this.

The Russian says that you simply can't judge Kurtz like an ordinary man. Kurtz seems larger than life. One can take him at many levels. At once he is a lunatic, a counter culture rebel and a demigod. He retains the greed for ivory yet turns his back on his own race. Kurtz is an enigma.
