Heart of Darkness

3. Marlow often recounts sights he viewed through binoculars. Does this technique provide Conrad with any benefits in telling Marlow’s story? How do the binoculars change Marlow’s’ perspective of the events?

The binoculars make Marlow's surroundings a reality. Up until the time he looked through the binoculars, Marlow didn't really see his surroundings, he assumed the fence to have ornate spheres, which were used for decoration. Finding they were in fact severed heads was not a surprise, but it was a reality check.
