He Knew He Was Right Background

He Knew He Was Right Background

He Knew He Was Right was written by the Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope, and was first published in Strahan and Co in 1869. The novel found great success among literary circles of that time and is one of Trollope's most famous works, alongside his Chronicles of Barsetshire series.

The novel follows the breakdown of a marriage between the main character, Louis Trevelyan, and his wife, due to his jealousy over the frequent visits his wife received from other men. The theme of jealousy is the key driving force of the novel, as it is in Shakespeare's Othello, a play to which Trollope alludes to throughout the novel.

Trollope's novel was adapted to television in the form of a four part series, with each episode of the series spanning an hour. The series premiered on BBC One and was under the direction of Tom Vaughn, and it starred Oliver Dimsdale as the main character, Louis Trevelyan.
