Why did Brian have down feelings about the survival pack

The pack has all the essentials for survival in the wilderness like soap, transmitter, fishing kit, rifle.....Brian is "Up" or happy to have these items. He is "down" because they make surviving too easy. A hatcher and bow and arrows demand that Brian become on with the environment rather than imposing himself on the environment with technology.
