Why do you think Gary Paulsen chose to have a 42 day gap in the story? Was it a good choice? Why/why not?

I think he wrote it to give time for Brian to emotionally mature. Brian needed time to lose his sense of fatalism and into survival mode. I think this gives us a better story to read and a more interesting protagonist.
