We know he was flying the plane for at least an hour before it crashed:
An hour passed. He picked up the headset and tried again—it was, he knew, in the end all he had—but there was no answer. He felt like a prisoner, kept in a small cell that was hurtling through the sky at what he thought to be 160 miles an hour, headed—he didn't know where—just headed somewhere until...ch 2

idk. thats why im on this page. to find out the answer to this question. But apparently nobody comes to this page, cause it sucks. so just delete it. and the only asnwer here is incorrect.

'After half an hour...he tore the headset off...' (p.17)
'An hour passed.' (p.17)
'He repeated the radio call seventeen times at ten minute intervals...between the seventeenth and eighteenth...the engine coughed.. and died' (p.20)
.5+1+2.8= 4.3 hours
Around 4 hours and 20 minutes. Someone might need to check my maths :)
