Quill

(Noun) Something made from or resembling a feather, especially a pen.

"The quill paused at the top of a likely-looking paragraph" (1).

Silhouette

(Noun) The outline of a body viewed as circumscribing a mass.

(Verb) To represent or project on a background like a silhouette.

"Silhouetted against the golden moon, and growing larger every moment, was a large, strangely lopsided creature, and it was flapping in Harry's direction" (7).

Matted

(Adjective) Formed into a tangled mass.

"Compared to the man on the television, however, whose gaunt face was surrounded by a matted, elbow-length tangle, Harry felt very well groomed indeed" (17).

Muggle

(Noun) Someone who is not part of the wizarding world.

"If he was going to act like a real Muggle, he'd better start now" (21).

Infamous

(Adjective) Having a reputation of the worst kind; notoriously evil.

"Sirius Black, possibly the most infamous prisoner ever to be held in Azkaban fortress, is still eluding capture..." (37).

Tonic

(Noun) An agent (such as a drug) that invigorates, restores, refreshes, or stimulates.

example: Scabbers was feeling unwell, so Ron bought him a rat tonic at the magical creatures shop.

Darn

(Transitive verb) To mend with interlacing stiches; to embroider by filling in with long running or interlacing stiches.

"The stranger was wearing an extremely shabby set of wizard's robes that had been darned in several places" (74).

Contemptuous

(Adjective) Manifesting, feeling, or expressing deep hatred or disapproval.

"'Nearly wet himself,' said Fred, with a contemptuous glance at Malfoy" (97).

Bludgeon

(Verb) To hit with heavy impact.

"They studied Red Caps, nasty little goblinlike creatures that lurked wherever there had been bloodshed: in the dungeons of castles and the potholes of deserted battlefields, waiting to bludgeon those who had gotten lost" (141).

Pompous

(Adjective) Having or exhibiting self-importance; arrogant.

"Percy Weasley ... was tailing him everywhere like an extremely pompous guard dog" (167).

Opaline

(Adjective) Resembling opal, a usually amorphous mineral that is a hydrated silica softer and less dense than quartz and typically with definite and often marked iridescent play of colors and is used especially as a gem.

"Two weeks before the end of the term, the sky lightened suddenly to a dazzling, opaline white and the muddy grounds were revealed one morning covered in glittering frost" (189).

Affront

(Verb) To insult especially to the face by behavior or language.

"Professor Trelawney looked highly affronted" (230).

Headlong

(Adverb) Without deliberation; recklessly.

"He was so lost in unpleasant thoughts of what it would feel like to have your soul sucked out of you that he walked headlong into Professor McGonagall halfway up the stairs" (248).

Tumultuoust

(Adjective) Marked by tumult; loud, excited, and emotional.

"They walked out onto the field to tumultuous applause" (259).

Dignity

(Noun) Formal reserve or seriousness of manner, appearance, or language.

"There was Percy, jumping up and down like a maniac, all dignity forgotten" (313).

Berserk

(Adjective) Frenzied or crazed.

"Ron was bent over, trying to keep Scabbers in his pocket, but the rat was going berserk" (331).

Malfunction

(Verb) To function imperfectly or badly; fail to operate normally.

"I thought the map must be malfunctioning. How could he be with you?" (347)

Brandish

(Transitive Verb) To shake or wave menacingly.

"Pettigrew flinched as though Black had brandished a whip at him" (368).

Loll

(Intransitive Verb) To hang loosely or laxly.

"He kept bumping his lolling head on the low ceiling" (378).

Stretcher

(Noun) A device for carrying a sick, injured, or dead person.

"He was conjuring stretchers and lifting the limp forms of Harry, Hermione, and Black onto them" (412).
