What happened on the "day that everything went wrong"?

On the day everything went wrong, Haroun arrives home to find that his mother has abandoned him and run off with another man, something for which he blames his father. Haroun's cruel words to his father, “What’s the point of it? What’s the use of stories that aren’t even true?”, then leave Rashid unable to tell his stories..... unable to work.
