The play opens with a sense of tension and high alert. The guards are expecting an attack by young Fortinbras, as well as an appearance of Old Hamlet's ghost. The guards were terrified that this ghost might be evil, But soft, behold! Lo, where it comes again. I’ll cross it though it blast me.—Stay, illusion!
