Lies and deceit is interwoven through the characters in Hamlet. Claudius certainly is tainted by lies and deceit. Gertrude allows herself to be won over by lies and deceit. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern also watch Hamlet under false pretenses. Shakespeare makes a point of telling us that truth always fights to get to the surface. Hamlet is obsessed with truth and gives his life for it. Denmark is marred and lies and deceit: it takes a tragic ending for Denmark to be cleansed.
