In "Death of a Salesman," Willy represents the last of the mid-century men striving to sell wares that don't belong to him individually and make a living. He came from a world where it was possible for men to improve their situations with hard work and personality, and he ended up in a world of impersonal relationships and capitalistic bureaucracy.

Mother Courage also represents a type of traveling salesman. Whereas, Willy enters by coming home exhausted and defeated, Mother Courage enters with her wagon, as large as life. Brecht's intention in this story is to illustrate how Capitalism can bring people to do things completely out of character in order to protect themselves and their businesses.
