Polonius is a controlling old man. Laertes makes a subtle sarcastic joke to Ophelia when he sees their father coming,

A double blessing is a double grace.
Occasion smiles upon a second leave.

For all Polonius's controlling ways, he does have some good advice on how Laertes should conduct himself when he is in France. Laertes is attentive and seems to respect his father and his advice.
