There is a sense of tension and high alert. The guards are expecting an attack by young Fortinbras as well as the Ghost of Hamlet sr. to show up. Ghosts were considered much more literally in Elizabethan times. The guards were terrified that this ghost may be evil, But soft, behold! Lo, where it comes again. I’ll cross it though it blast me.—Stay, illusion!
