How might polonius have helped Claudius after the death of the elder hamlet

As Claudius' "minister of state" Polonius already does help Claudius with the many issues that are going on. He could have advised him about the conflict with Norway and we do not know whether or not he has done so as Claudius sends ambassadors to try to sort the Norwegian "mess" out. He seems to try to help with the Hamlet question even though helping Hamlet with his grief and confusion over his father's death and his mother's swift remarriage seems difficult for Polonius when he has his own family issues to worry about.
