What qualities does Claudius demonstrate when dealing with the courtiers? ACT 1 SCENE 2

Claudius' words and actions in Act I, Scene II, can be considered contradictory at best. His words make us, as well as the courtiers uncomfortable. His obvious joy and professed sadness are disingenuine.
